THE SHOVEL and THE LABOR SPADE

A brief story about Barbara G. Koopman, MD, PhD.

It was perhaps a Thursday as I began what had become for me an almost daily event. From my San Francisco apartment I walked the six or so blocks to the residence of Nicolai Levashov. Once there I would experience an extraordinary session that would elevate me into another realm, a new place of being. As a beginner trainee of Nicolai’s, the sessions were part of his program for my health and development.

I was ready with eager anticipation, but as I approached, I paused suddenly to observe a person on the sidewalk looking upward toward Nicolai’s third floor. Of course, many others came to visit Nicolai, but right away I could tell this was an extraordinary woman. Who could it be, I wondered. I remained observing as she stood looking upward, wearing a blue denim outfit and matching hat - what I later learned was a signature attire.

Barbara G. Koopman

This was my first encounter with Dr. Barbara Koopman. Her energy field or aura was so compelling that I had stopped in my tracks on the sidewalk. She stood out to me, an uninformed stranger walking by – but a stranger not for long.

Barbara asked me if I knew the building. I said yes and that I was going there. She wanted to join me, and we entered together to undertake the tiers of steep stairs to the 3rd floor.

As we climbed, Nicolai peered down the stairwell as he often did, asking who was with me. At that point Barbara introduced herself to Nicolai – and to me as well. I was astonished and pleased to meet this celebrated woman I had read and heard about for several years. A small part of me wondered whether Nicolai had arranged for us to arrive together – as he was known to do at times.

Barbara initially watched while Nicolai performed his session with me. And then Nicolai advised her to remain in the other room and out of his flow. Though Barbara was ultra sensitive to energy and could not tolerate being in Nicolai’s field for very long, she could not overcome her intense curiosity and desire to learn more. She kept tiptoeing back in to observe my session. Nicolai made adjustments so Barbara could be present for short times. Afterward we all had a discussion. As a result, Barbara and I quickly became friends and agreed to meet another time for lunch and further conversation. We could hardly wait to chat. It was such an exciting time!

As Barbara and I got to know one another, of course there were many ongoing talks about Nicolai and his work. Barbara lamented that she had not been able to come to our initial training because of commitments at her home in New York. And it was also not possible in the current conditions; however, we figured a way to share a small basement place so that Barbara could come on occasion to our training meetings and for the all-important sessions with Nicolai.

The New York Seminars (c. 1995)

Barbara immediately grasped the extraordinary nature of Nicolai’s gifts and abilities and began exploring at once how those talents could be brought to the world. As a result of her creative thoughts, Barbara, ever an industrious networker, organized a series of presentations for Nicolai in New York City, where Barbara lived. This was partly in hopes that Nicolai would travel to give regular seminars there – or even relocate to New York.

Arrangements were underway, and with good fortune it turned out I would be able to attend the seminars. On a highly anticipated morning I climbed into the airport limousine where Nicolai was already seated. What I can only explain as a fine energy vibration permeated the vehicle (this feeling is almost beyond description – something often felt in Nicolai’s presence seemingy exuded from Nicolai’s field). Nicolai greeted with a warm hello, no doubt knowing I was flustered at this opportunity to begin travel with him, and off we went to the airport and ultimately to New York City.

Barbara, as expected, had done a magnificent job of organizing three nightly meetings in the city. In the meetings Nicolai would describe his life and work and demonstrate his talents to New Yorkers and others in attendance. On the final day a smaller group of us met at Barbara’s New York apartment (where I now live) and discussed with Nicolai whether he would come to New York City and conduct trainings similar to those in San Francisco. In the end, Nicolai declined. This was a disappointment to Barbara and others. But Barbara, ever the warrior, carried on to create what she knew was important to the planet - that Nicolai’s work should become known.

Spreading the Word: Elucidating Nicolai’s Amazing Works

With unflagging support for Nicolai and a brilliance for words, Barbara used her quite substantial talents to create the papers well-known to most who have read Nicolai’s works, “Psychic Healing and the Anisotropic Universe,” in 2 parts. In what is now considered a “scientific document”[1] she gives a straightforward examination of Nicolai’s anisotropy, psychic healing, and other topics, lifting a shroud of mystery from these often difficult subjects. I will add here that she worked initially from only a rough transliteration, looking up in the Russian or inquiring with Nicolai when to her the translations were not clear. (Recall that this was a time prior to the translation support presently available by internet. Though what we now have is admittedly poor, at that time it was scant and even poorer, if one can say.) In addition, where it was possible, Barbara documented case studies of Nicolai’s work with patients. These not only passed scrutiny but aroused noteworthy interest from both medical and other scientists.

In addition to these brilliant creations of her own papers, the first three books published by Nicolai were edited and pulled together by Barbara, who collected forewords, checked translations, and smoothed the words and phrases to create the very readable documents we now have: – Final Appeal to Mankind, Vol. 1; Final Appeal to Mankind, Vol. 2; Spirit and Mind, Vol. 1. No small tasks, these were tasks that were very well completed. We regularly reap the benefit of her efforts as we read these volumes in English.

Barbara was not one to sit in a “warm, comfortably arranged space, … invested in a worldview.”[2] She worked with both shovel and spade to discover and forge new understandings of the cosmos and humanity.

On 22 July 2012, only 6-7 weeks following Nicolai’s departure, Barbara left us. I was privileged to be with my dear friend at that time. I know she would have been proud to know Fedor Shkrudnev and to have worked fervently to support his cause and mission. As we deeply honor and appreciate her efforts and what she left for us, we can also learn from her passion for the truth.
